This short book is the work of Dr. Theophilus Goldridge Pinches (1856-1934), a respected historian and lecturer in Assyrian at University College, London. Originally published in 1906, this book, at the time, represented a complete up-to-date understanding of Mesopotamian literature. For its time, the book is eminently readable, and has a wealth of information on the Mesopotamian pantheon and religious practices.

But, now for the bad news. In fact, the state of knowledge about Mesopotamian religion and culture has come a long way since 1906, and a great deal of information has been learned since this book came out. Also, as this book was written for the British Museum, it is not written according to scholarly conventions. So, if you are doing research for an academic report, this is not a resource that I would recommend.

However, having said all that, I did find this book easy to read and easy to understand. So, if you happen to have this book, and are interested in Mesopotamian religion, then this is not a bad book to start with. But, if you are looking for a resource on this subject, I would recommend that you look to a newer book. This is a good book, but not one that I recommend.
